Long-Distance Pipelines vs. LNG Tank Farms: How Do Actuator Requirements Differ?

I. Two Conditions, Two Selection Logics

Although both are critical to the gas value chain, transmission pipelines and LNG tank farms demand different things from valve actuators. Pipelines require dependable output at remote, unattended sites under high vibration. LNG tank farms require precise, safe operation in cryogenic, hazardous-area conditions. Treating them alike can cost efficiency at best and create latent safety risks at worst.

Long-Distance Transmission Pipelines (PNG): Pipelines run long distances over complex terrain, and most block valve stations are remote and unattended, with limited power and gas supply. With high pressure classes and widely varying valve sizes, ESD action must complete within a very short time, so actuators must deliver stable torque, fast response, and strong environmental resilience.

LNG Tank Farms / Cryogenic Regasification Stations: Media temperatures reach -162°C in a cryogenic, flammable, explosive environment. Valves are mainly small- and medium-bore cryogenic types, at staffed sites with centralized control. Selection is not about maximum torque, but about cryogenic sealing reliability, hazardous-area compliance, and repeatable operation, since even a minor sealing or response defect can lead to leakage.

II. Differentiated Torque Requirements

Long-Distance Pipelines: Large-bore, high-pressure valves dominate, and breakaway torque far exceeds running torque. The actuator must deliver consistent torque across the full 0° to 90° stroke, with no drop-off at seating or during ESD closure, while withstanding long-term pipeline vibration and thermal cycling. This demands high structural strength and long mechanical life.

LNG Tank Farms: Valve sizes are moderate, but torque stability and repeatable operation at low temperature are more critical. Cold causes materials to contract and elastomer seals to stiffen, so unstable actuator torque can lead to seat leakage or sticking. Selection should prioritize verified low-temperature performance data and explosion-protection certification, not maximum torque alone.

III. One Unit for Two Demanding Operating Conditions

Jiangsu Langet's balanced vane-type gas-hydraulic actuator is a proven solution for both long-distance transmission pipelines and LNG cryogenic stations.

For PNG Transmission Pipelines: The symmetrical twin-vane design delivers rated torque across the full 0° to 90° stroke for strong breakaway and fast ESD closure. With no side load on the stem and over 95% mechanical efficiency, it resists long-term pipeline vibration. Torque range is 94 N·m to 1,000,000 N·m for NPS 4 Class 300 to NPS 56 Class 900 valves, and every unit is torque tested before shipment, making it ideal for ESD shutoff at unattended remote block valve stations.

For LNG Cryogenic Stations: A -55°C ambient-rated configuration is available, with seals and hydraulic components verified by thermal cycling tests for stable low-temperature torque output. The unit holds TÜV Rheinland SIL 2 certification and Ex d IIC flameproof certification, and is IP65/IP66 rated, meeting the cryogenic and hazardous-area requirements of LNG facilities and minimizing leakage risk.
